It's important to remember that you are not alone, and there are resources and support available to help you navigate the challenges of online abuse and harassment. There are a number of recommended steps you can take and of course - reporting to the appropriate authorities and support networks where necessary to ensure your safety and well-being.

Document the Abuse

Keep a record of any abusive messages, comments, or other online interactions. Take screenshots, save emails, and note dates and times of incidents. This evidence may be important for legal or reporting purposes.

Block and Report the Abuser

Most online platforms and social media websites have reporting mechanisms that allow you to report abusive content and block the person responsible. Use these features to prevent further contact with the harasser.

Seek Support

Reach out to friends, family, or colleagues for emotional support. Talking to someone you trust can provide comfort and guidance.

Report to the Gardaí (Irish Police)

If you believe the online abuse involves threats, stalking, or other criminal behaviour, you can report it to the Gardaí (Irish police). Contact your local Garda station or use the online portal to file a report. Be sure to provide all available evidence.

Report to Online Platforms

Report the abuse to the relevant online platforms. Many platforms have policies against harassment and abuse and can take action against the offenders. Provide them with the evidence you've collected.

Legal Action

If the abuse involves criminal actions, consider seeking legal advice. In some cases, you may be able to pursue a civil or criminal case against the perpetrator.

Consider a Protection Order

In severe cases, you may seek a safety or protection order from the courts to restrict the harasser's access to you.

Use Online Safety Tools

Learn about and utilize online safety tools that can help protect your privacy and reduce your exposure to online abuse.

Support Services

Reach out to support services or organisations that specialize in assisting victims of online abuse or harassment. They can provide advice, counseling, and resources to help you cope with the situation.

Educate Yourself

Familiarize yourself with Irish laws related to online abuse and harassment. Knowing your rights and legal options is important.

Self-Care

Focus on your well-being. Online abuse can be emotionally draining, so take steps to care for your mental and emotional health. Consider seeking support from a mental health professional if needed.
